One Sentence: Is there nothing Stephen Colbert can't do.
I never watched the Comedy Central TV show. I had not gotten into Comedy Central yet. I was only watching movies at this time, ignoring the growing group of people who would be my kings and queens of comedy. Stephen Colbert, Amy Pohler, and many others who have grown into comic stars with pasts that are just that good. Strangers With Candy was on Comedy Central for a short time, but launched Colbert into The Daily Show and then onto his own show. I think there was a re-look at what he had done and who he worked with and Amy was on the top of that list. Amy Sedaris plays Jerri Blank in the movie prequel to the show Stranger With Candy.
The movie is exactly what you would expect if you know old Comedy Central, and would blend that with a rated R movie. It is exactly what you would expect. The only thing missing was a silly death by some random loser on the sidelines. I bet they shot it and left it on the floor of the final cut. However being that it was exactly what I was expecting was a little bit of a let down. Not a large one, but it just didn't hit a home run for me. It seems like they had the opportunity to so a lot more, and they might of been restricted with money or time.
They had so many good people involved with the project. Amy, and Stephen, and their director and co-writer Paul Dinello. Then there was sarah jessica parker, Matthew Broderick, Allison Janney, Ian Holm and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. It just seems like there was so much potential to be really really great and it was just pretty good. I know I should not be detracting from the movie because of what it could have been and just look at it for what it was, but with that group, I just can not let it go. So yes, it was funny, not Hilarious, and for those that aren't into old school Comedy Central comedy, you might even want to skip it. For those that do, you will not be disappointed, not too disappointed.
