Pompeii Movie Review Poster

One Sentence: Angry volcano is angry it has to be in this movie.

Rated: PG-13

Nudity: None

After Credits: None

I am going to open with this movie was slightly better than I expected it to be.  The Volcano really won me over.  The CG on it was outstanding.  Truly some amazing visual work on angry Mount Vesuvius.  It was as beautiful as this poster implies it would be.  So I just wanted to say up front this movie could have been a lot worse and at least it wasn’t.

So now the parts that were not so good.  It felt like at one time this movie was rated R.  They wanted it to be bloody, and have violent gushing blood shooting out of stabbed necks.  Then someone said, this movie isn’t good enough to make back our money if we make it rated R.  Make it PG-13 and then edited it down to make that happen.  The edits are hard and odd.  There are weird zooms and slow motion that was added to make it less violent.  It really sticks out, through a lot of this summer blockbuster that was banished to February.

The acting and story do not really help it either.  It adds a slave love story and an evil Senator, who killed a whole tribe.  It has justice, love, gladiators and a volcano that is blowing up.  It has a lot going on, and not a lot of time to do it.  So it feels rushed, and that things are happening a little too quickly.  If you can get past all of that, it is an entertaining mindless movie with pretty explosions.  However they were not enough to me feel like this movie is justified to be banished to late February.  I would rent it if you really want to see John Snow in a movie.
