The Brothers Grimm

Rated: PG-13 Running Time: 118 Minutes Year: 2005 Boobs: Zero One Sentence: The princess and the pea and Rapunzel were the same girl! Matt Damon, Heath Ledger, Terry Gilliam, and Monica Bellucci in a fantasy comedy movie about Grimm's fairy tales, how can this be anything but good? I don't know how, but it was anything but good. I would not call it a flaming pile of crap that no one should ever view, but with the subject matter, cast and director, I was expecting a lot better film. It is really unfair to place so much on the shoulders of Terry Gilliam but I mean with his body of work, you just come to expect the most bizzare and grand thing you have seen all year. If nothing else it is beyond where you expect the movie will go and really makes it worth seeing for some reason or another. I did not feel this way about this one. It was not bad. Had some funny jokey stuff, but for the most part, was a bit slow, and kinda bland. The intergration of all the fairy tales was pretty cool. The vision of creating someting that could later be turned into the story that we know now, was for the most part well done and for me was fun. It caused me to notice and point out those stories that were used, and there were a lot of them. However past that, there was not the broken down wall that Gilliam tends to go through to convey a message or idea. It was very grounded, it seemed like he got a lot of studio flack from the Weinsteins after they took over the project from MGM, so it might not be fair to blame him either. Overall I was let down as I was expecting a lot from this movie, but if with a lower expectation I would not rate it as an awesome movie, it was totally rentable for the whole family at home. I would even think it would be ok for the younger ones, but don't expect 12 Monkeys or Holy Grail.
