One Sentence: Jack Black should be in more romantic comedies.
Ahh the romantic comedy. The movies that ask us to suspend the most disbelief usually. I go into these movies prepared for that, and usually I will make it out of romantic comedies, quite pleased. I have fun with them. I think the humor around relationships is funny, has a good place when in a relationship and overall keeps me entertained. However this one, might not even be considered a romantic comedy. It had some humor in it, and was far lighter than something like The Notebook, but wasn't funny enough to be called a romantic comedy. I think they were trying to go for romantic comedy…
So we have [tag]Jude Law, Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet[/tag] and [tag]Jack Black[/tag] as the main characters in this movie. Kate I like, and Jude I like. The other two are just ok in a normal movie, but I think were both all wrong for a romantic comedy. Jack Black? Who actually did better in this movie than anything since School Of Rock. How is he a romantic intrest. Aren't these movies made for girls, who want to feel swept off their feet and that it could happen to them. I don't think many ladies want to have the fantasy about Jack Black.
Other than the actors the movie dealt with some slightly heaver than comedy level issues. Kids, cheating, depression, work overload and other adult non-escapist things. Which is fine, the issues were presented well and fit within the story, I guess I was just expecting something a little bit lighter, and a lot funnier. So while the movie is good, except for some casting choices, it is not all jokes and rainbows. I would not let what I say keep you from renting it, it is not depressing at all, just not as light as Failure to Launch.
