One Sentence: A snowboarding documentary.
First Descent is another in a long line of extreme sport documentaries that have been coming out. I would expect next to see Moto X, Ping Pong, and Japanese Game Shows. All extreme and popular. But today we talk about First Descent, which is a doc about back country mountain riding in Alaska, along with snipits of history of the sport itself.
The doc follows some of the original back country snowboarders, along with the new generation of hot young stars in the snowboard world as they come together for the experience that is the Alaskan Back Country. So I was a bit let down as I thought it was going to be mostly about the history, but that was not the case. It was more about these 5 riders and the 10 day trip. In between some of the days they would show a little bit about the history, but it was lacking any depth at all.
The footage was very cool, and the snowboarding was excellent, but didn't have anything more to it. It was most like a polished snowboard video that was a little bit nicer for the family than you would normally see, with a lack of any depth on any aspect of the sport. It missed out on so much and just left me wanting more about the history, the people that started it and what drove them together and how the sport grew. The total amount of history in the movies was probably 20 minutes, so it could of done a lot more.
It's a pretty movie, and cool if you like snowboarding but it just wasn't quite what I was looking for. History no, snowboard video, yes.
