This movie was pitched as a earthly disaster movie. When I think of these types of movies, I think of Armageddon, The Core, and Deep Impact. Things like this, which are overdone Hollywood pieces that are entertaining, but are not usually the smartest of movies. Taking liberties with science, and technology. Sunshine was offered to the consumer as one of the same but without the blockbuster cast. So no one saw it, so no one knows, it really is not like that.
If I was going to compare this movie to anything it would be most like Event Horizon, except without the Hell or bleeding eye sockets. It takes place in space, and at no point do we deal with Earth in the story. So it is a nice change from what I was expecting and if I was comparing this movie to The Core I would say Sunshine is a lot better movie. However just because it is not a disaster movie, and better than some others doesn't mean that it is a great movie.
We are met with characters, whom are unlikeable, while they are I believe supposed to be that way, it makes for us not caring if and when anything wrong happens. Also we have no caring for the issues with the Sun, we do not associate the issue with the Earth, becuase they never show the earth. So our only frame of reference are these 7 jerks on a spaceship with a giant disk. Then it gets all weird, and doesn't really follow any convention of reality. It gets all trippy 2001 and I am not sure what happens next. It is far deeper, or tries to be deeper than a disaster movie, and in the end you are confused and going what happened in the last 20 minutes.
I am not sure about this movie, it had some good action, some good space sets and scenes, and is not really a bad movie. It is a weird movie and will leave you a bit confused about some of the things that happened. This weirdness isn't enough to make me say not to rent it. However I am leaving that call to you all. Weird one, if you like weird, you will like it.
