A long time ago there was a show that all the nerds loved. It was canceled, there was much anger, and then glorious syndication. Cartoon Network and Comedy Central picked it up. People asked for more, and finally after 2 years, the show returned…sort of. Instead of getting a season on TV, they got a movie deal. There are supposedly going to be a few of these direct to DVD movies. The first is Bender's Big Score. Which I am reviewing today.
The name is the first issue here, from what I gathered from this movie Bender does not really have a big score. So that is my first issue. Everyone is all here for the movie. All the voices, art, jokes, characters, and everything that all the fans have come to love about Futurama. So that is cool. It opened with some solid jokes and I was really getting into it. Sadly it seemed like they lost steam or were winded from having to make this movie 4 times as long as they normally had to make episodes, and didn't have much of the original staff on hand anymore.
It wasn't that it was bad, because it was not bad at all. Actually it was pretty solid, it just did not offer anything new. It was like a reunion special. Take all the things from the show, and use them all in one big longer mashup without going outside of our futurama box. No real new characters, or places, or things or monsters, or anything. It was just a lot of the same stuff, and when you do a movie you really should try to do something new, or bigger, or something. There was nothing. So while it was a good longer futurama cartoon, that is all it is. So fans, rent it, just don't expect to be blown away, and ignore the title.
