Nothing about this movie is especially surprising, from the hip opening music, that is not a top 40 song, to the sensitive skinny male lead, and the quirky yet cynical female lead. There is an offical selection Sundance badge on the poster to let you know that it was a hip hit and that if you are one that doesn't like mainstream Hollywood movies, you will surely like (500) days of summer. Everything about this movie was expected, everything except the script. Which was a wonderful, funny, evolution of a relationship and the lives that relationship touched.
It doesn't fit into the mold of Romantic Comedy, or prechy indpenedent movie where thier point is forced on you and everyone in the movie is meant to suffer life's harsh lessons. There might be life lessons in this movie, and suffering, but it doesn't feel like an overbaring weight that the characters and the audience is supposed to carry for the rest of thier lives. It allows us to laugh and be free of the suffering and just observe the great story unfold before us. It was a lot of fun, very funny, and in the end very sweet.
I think this movie is for everyone, it is a good date movie, and the guys will have a fun time with it as well. Not only is it a good date movie, it is solidly funny, and is actually a pretty good movie as a comedy on it's own. It is being released in a limited release this Friday with more theaters the week following, so if you have the time and already saw Harry Potter, I think this would be a good movie to take your honey on a weekend date to. So check it out, or add it to your netflix queue, I think you will have a good time.
