I was talking about movies with some people, and I said I wish Stephen Spielberg would direct another movie. I knew Super 8 was coming out, but I didn’t expect it to fill in the void I felt like I was missing. I thought it would be good, but I wanted something more. Well J.J. Abrams and Stephen Spielberg together made a movie that filled that void. It was like a master collaboration of everything I was hoping for and more. A perfect balance of the type of movie you loved, when you were 5, or 10, or 15, or even 50 years old.
It felt like they knew what we were missing, and they made it a movie. A beautiful original movie, that at the same time is an homage to every movie I have loved for the last 30 years. It was new but felt wonderfully familiar. It tapped into all of those places that make you love a movie, discovery, adventure, danger, action, comedy, and understanding. I made me fall in love with the movies again. In this time of the cash grabbed, sequel, 3-D mass market, Super 8 is a wonderfully balanced, well made movie that will be a classic for years to come. The type of movie that you have seen 50 times, but will watch again when it comes on TV on Sunday afternoon. It is just that good.
This is easily my favorite movie of the year so far, and I am telling you if you are reading this and have time to go see this movie tonight at midnight, go! If not, skip work and see it tomorrow early. That way it will still give you time to go see it a second time over the weekend. This is not a rental. This is a go see this movie in the best theater within an hour radius of you type of movie.
