I think this is an expected Oscar contender movie. Directed by Clint Eastwood. A Biopic on one of the 20th centuries most famous people. Heavy subject matter, and dark looks into unknown family lives. It has everything it needs I think. Except for the being one of the best movies of the year thing.
J. Edgar fits the formula, but that is all the movie feels like, it is fitting in a formula. Get big star and put him in old people make up. Horrible make up I might add. Get big star and put him in young people make up. Horrible make up I might add. Make broad swipes at history that might or might not be true but make for attempted powerful scenes. Make assumptions about things that no one could possibly know that are alive, in a way that makes the movie feel more powerful or more Oscar worthy. I feel kind of dirty I was this pandered to in a movie.
J. Edgar is overall not a bad movie, and I think outside of the context of the Oscars it could actually be a good movie. I just feel like it should of been about something a little less important, and a little more worthy of over acted drama. This movie should of felt like a real history, instead it felt like the History Channel. There is no proof that this didn’t happen, so we are assuming it did.
So I think this is a renter. I don’t think you need to go see this one in the theater, unless you are a hard core history buff. For those that are beware, you might be raising your hands in the air and yelling at the screen, that isn’t how that happened.
