I don’t want to start on a negative with this movie review, because I actually liked this movie very much. It was a smart, well written time travel action sci-fi movie. So I don’t want anyone to be confused when I say that I don’t get why they made Joseph Gordon-Levitt look sort of like a young Bruce Willis. It actually made him look weird, and less like Bruce Willis, than if they just left it alone and allowed us to suspend disbelief that he is the same person. It looked odd and off putting, it actually took me out of the movie a little bit. So, movie people you don’t need to CG up the faces of people that are a different age but the same person.
Ok now that is out of the way, we can talk about the movie. Looper is the sci-fi movie you are hoping it is. Is is a subtle sci-fi, carefully written and shot, to make everything seem like it is in the right place at the right time. It is carried by excellent actors including Pierce Gagnon, a very young actor who had a lot to do in Looper. It plays a little long, but overall you do not notice, and it picks back up quickly after it needs to slow down. It feels raw and dirty, not like a sci-fi movie at all. It feels real, like what the future might be like just a few years down the road. It is very well thought out, and I liked it very much.
Out of all the movies coming out this weekend, this is the one I would want to go see, and I think this is the only one that anyone should pay to go see this weekend. It is worth full price, Friday night standing in line.
