Judd Apatow can almost do no wrong in my book. I think he has his finger at least on my pulse of life and family. I think a lot of others as well because people love his movies, and they do so well even for being rated R movies. The ability to write well, direct well, get a message across that he intends and letting amazing comedy actors ad lib freely really makes for some wonderful moments and movies. This is 40 has that same feel, of a deliberate message, wonderful comedy moments, and a look into what feels like real lives.
It has all of those things in it, that make an Apatow film great. This Is 40 gets a little bit heavier than his other movies though. He always has fights, and they always seem a more real than most movies, but in This Is 40 it gets a little too nasty, for a little too long. The great things about his movies is the balance between comedy and what feels like real life, and while striking a balance can make it not real, it makes it watchable. This Is 40 misses that balance. There are parts where I think the negativity goes on a little too long and we don’t have that comedy adjustment and I got to feeling really bad for everyone in the situation. I wanted it to let up a little bit. I wasn’t having fun anymore. Eventually it bounces back, but you have felt drained.
The comedy elements are of course amazing. The actors in the movie all know the timing and ability to delivery amazing comedy and it shows. Melissa McCarthy, Robert Smigel, Paul Rudd, Jason Seigel, and Annie Mumolo all fill in and round out the amazing cast of characters. It is very funny in some parts and has that Apatow style of comedy.
It is with great sadness that I am going to say rent this one later, and do not watch it the week before or during Christmas. I don’t think I have ever done that for another Apatow film, but I think it is just a bit too negative for the next couple of weeks. It is good, but I don’t think it is amazing and I think you can better spend your time this two weeks.
