If you can fake it, you can make it. That is what Escape Plan is all about. Old guys faking they are still ripped action heroes. Unlike the last Rambo though this movie seems to have faked it enough to be a watchable action flick. I wouldn’t go out of my way to see Escape Plan, but if you do happen to see it somewhere it won’t be the worst thing that has ever happened to you.
Some of it was cool. The design of this new prison. The way they had to plan to escape. It felt like a heist movie for a lot of it, and those complex, impossible scenarios that are a perfect Rube Goldberg machine of pieces all falling into place work for me. Jim Caviezel also was wonderfully sadistic and evil. He pulled off that evil, contained, calm psycho very well. For the most part this movie didn’t feel like a movie where two old guys were the stars trying to act like they are not as old as the pyramids. Even Arnold and Sly were fine. They didn’t feel like they were past their prime.
What was bad, was the larger plot, and the end of the movie action which seemed out of place. It tuned this action movie into an old 80’s action movie with excessive killing and other things that just felt out of place. I think a more subdued ending would of fit better into this movie. I can say that even with the over done ending, which really with these two guys who isn’t expecting that. It is worth seeing. I probably wouldn’t pay full price for it, but if you happen to miss these two guys, you could do a lot worse.
