This movie is all about acting. It is a performers movie. People pushing amazing characters through a time that was not the best time in America. They lead these characters through a sad and comical story that gets a little bit off the rails. It almost doesn’t matter what the story is, because the characters are who you fall in love with watching American Hustle.
Amy Adams and Christian Bale are wonderful. Whatever magic David O. Russell does to get these types of performances out of people should be bottled and sold. It is such a great experience watching these two. Louis C.K. has a small part, but again it is so perfect. Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Jeremy Renner fill in the rest of the major cast as perfect choices. It was such a joy to see all of these actors push what they could do in this film and world that was created for them. It was a movie all about letting the actors shine.
The plot is fine. There is nothing wrong with the plot. It isn’t the most meaningful story in the world, and it doesn’t deliver that punch you would expect from a best picture of the year nominee. So it might not show up on the Oscar list for best picture nominees. I would not be surprised to see a lot of names for acting on the awards lists. A movie worth going to see for sure in the theater. A great movie watching experience.
