3 Villains is a scary thing, especially after Spider-Man 3, the first Spider-Man 3. Electro, The Green Goblin and Rhino. I think the bad taste from Spider-Man 3 lingered because I heard a lot of people saying they had very low expectations of this movie. How could you not. With that many things going on at once, it seems like just too much. The weird thing is, those 3 villains are not even the focus of this movie. It is what has always been the main focus of Spider-Man his struggle. With great power comes great responsibility. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 handles this issue very well, and looks into the man better than any other movie before it.
I think the original Spider-Man 2 is the best Marvel movie ever made, but I think this new Spider-Man 2 created the best comic book version of a super hero so far. Andrew Garfield killed it as Peter Parker. Young, mouthy, fun, fast, and struggling with decisions, life and money. It painted a very good picture that I think sometimes gets skipped over when we are dealing with 2.5 hour movies. This led to a look into his life, history and relationships that is rarely done. Because of that, the villains take a back seat, and I think it worked. They were not significant enough for you to need to know more than what we learned about them, and I think it was handled very well. I guess maybe the Green Goblin came to be a little too quickly but it can be forgiven.
So this one worked for me. I would say that you should go check it out this weekend for sure it is worth the full price ticket. You do not need to go see it in IMAX 3-D. A good start to the Summer season of big blockbusters.
