With very little notice, The Last Mimzy was released on DVD this past week. A movie I had wanted to see in the theater, but time constraints and other movies pushed it to DVD. I thought it looked good, and even though it is considered a family movie, that never keeps me from checking out something. Especially if I think it's going to spur imagination.
Mimzy is a horribly acted, cool, kids movie about time travel, space, the future, and kid power. It is constantly being pulled apart by tragic acting by almost everyone involved in the project, from the kids, to Rainn Wilson. Luckily, it was cool enough that even with lines and emotions being hacked at every chance the actors could, the story was magical enough for me to have a good time with and even recommend. It made me even want to find out more about the story and where it came from, which has quite a bit of history, all the way back to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
I think if you have kids, this one is good for everyone to watch. It isn't scary, or have anything that is emotionally crushing. It is smart and futuristic and fun. It should keep the kids happy while you are not bored to death or driven mad by some repetitive singing. While not the best kids movie I have ever seen, it has enough there, that I say go pick it up for a rental at the house for a fun family movie night.
