The Last Airbender Movie Review

The Last Airbender Poster Movie Review

One Sentence: One of the best stories I have seen in a long time that got ruined by becoming a movie.

Rated: PG

Running Time: 103 Minutes

Release Date: 01-July-2010

Nudity: None

All I knew about The Last Airbender is that it was a cartoon on Nickelodeon.  I didn't know that it would be an amazing story blending martial arts, magic, gods and a giant made up awesome world.  This is the outer shell of The Last Airbender, a story that could have been an amazing blockbuster for this summer.  Sadly the story had to have actors in it, scripts written for those actors, and then those actors had to speak the dialog written in those scripts and act the parts they were asked to act by a director.

How good can a story be when the acting makes you want to rip your eyes out?  How bad can the acting be when the story is something you want to work so much so you can see the other 2 movies in the trilogy.  This is The Last Airbender, in 3-D, I might add.  It was like the story itself which dealt with Yin and Yang.  Great story, horrible acting.  Solid CG, tragic dialog.  Meh 3-D as the great balance.  I think M. Night Shyamalan might have done this on purpose, it is true film making art.  Take the theme of Yin and Yang and make it literal for the audience.  I am not sure if that is a genius move or a mad man's decision, oh no Yin and Yang again!

I have no idea if you should watch this movie.  It is a kids movie, it has kids as the main actors and is very painful to watch.  However if you like fantasy, and do not know the story, it is quite good.  I liked the story so much that I am hoping that you go see this movie even after my review, so it can make enough money to get the other two movies made so I can know what happens.  I am not willing to lie to you about the quality of the movie to do that.  So go see this movie for me, tell me what you thought and if the story is enough to make up for everything else wrong about The Last Airbender.

The Last Airbender was one of my favorite cartoons when i was growing up.
So far I’m not disappointed with what I’ve seen. I’m going to watch the movie this weekend in 3-D and I’m looking forward to it despite all the bad critiques that the multi-million dollar production has received.

In addition, I’m also looking forward to watch this film that will come out this fall.
The Incubus is the story of a different kind of vampires who are taking over this small town.

This was the worst movie I’ve seen all year.

The story was muddled by Shyamalan into some sort of hideous abomination and then acted out by the worst actors imaginable. The only performances worth mentioning were those by Dev Patel and Shaun Toub as Zuko and Iroh. By the end of the film I found myself rooting for them more than the main protagonists.

If the story interests you, I’d highly recommend watching the cartoon series.

  • I’m not convinced at all by this one, might catch it on DVD (might).
