I have always like Tom Hanks, I think most people in general do. So I am always fond of seeing movies starring him. So I didn’t know what to do when I saw he was starring, wrote and directed a movie with Julia Roberts, who I can not stand. Her scowling uppity face kills all movies for me she is in, and has for a very long time. Can Tom Hanks sweetness override Julia Roberts horrible bitterness? I am glad to say yes, Larry Crowne is just sweet enough.
This movie about a man losing a lot and then coming back as someone new is a wonderfully charming and sweet movie. It is funny, smart, simple and beautiful. It balances a lot of subjects in a very careful way that never seems to heavy, preachy, of overly Hollywood. It makes you love this character Larry Crowne and almost everyone else in the movie. Especially George Takei who has a small role, but is hilarious in it. I felt better after watching this movie. It just seemed like it could make you feel a little better no matter what the problem is, even if it was just for an hour and a half. It isn’t crass, or adult, or harsh, or anything negative. It is just a good, funny movie, that Tom Hanks should be proud of making happen.
I would say if you are not into giant kick ass 3-D robots, then this is a great movie for this weekend. You can get away with this one on DVD though. There is nothing in it that requires you to see it in the theater, but it is good enough for you to pay full price on Saturday night this three day weekend. So I actually recommend both movies this weekend. Larry Crowne for a weekend matinee, and then Transformers on 4th of July night, since so may cities are cancelling fireworks this year.
